Diary Archives : Who wants to be a Millionaire

24-11-2005

All the PhD students in Trento are given accomodations in student hostels during the initial months. Later one could switch to a private accomodation according to his needs and choice. Hostel life is one of the best phases in the lives of those who have had a chance to live in these blessed environs. I have been living in various types of hostels at the different cities I lived in during my student life in Germany, now here in Trento its a different experiance altogether.

Our hostel at Via Rosmini 7 has a very pleasant atmosphere. Since all of us are doing PhD, we have the same range of thinking and understand each other well. On one evening there was some discussion about economics and finance. Two of our hostel mates are doing research on Economics and World Trade. There was some talk of our currencies and people were exchanging currencies from their countries. The Turkish guy - Serdar (who has a remarkable sense of humor) was talking about his currency, the Turkish Lira. The inflation in Turkey was so high that the currency in common use was in denominations of millions and in order to conform to EU standards Turkey had now decided reform its currency. They replaced all the 1 millions by 1 lira - simply removed the 6 extra 0´s. So now 1 million was equal to 1 Lira, and all the old notes were to be replaced. So Sardaar was happily distributung his currency notes. He was asking " who wants to be a Millionare ? " and then distributing all his million Lira notes to us. I too become a Millionaire that night.

I also got a Belarussian Currency, in exchange I gave my Indian rupees.
